David: Fifty Stories for Fifty Years
I had lived more than half my life lost in addiction. I first got high when I was 13 years old, then spent the next 17 years of my life chasing that escape from life, trying to fill a void.
I’ve seen both sides of addiction. The best way I can describe it is that I was drowning, and I could see people around me telling me to swim (get sober) and live a good life. I didn’t know how to swim. I was struggling to stay alive.
I asked God to save me, and he did.
In jail, I started reading my Bible and praying daily to God; please help. I stayed there for nine months. When I walked into The Foundry Men’s Program, my life changed forever.
The staff at The Foundry taught me how to apply God’s word to my everyday life. I learned who God is and that, yes, God does Love me. I learned the value of discipline in my life and my daily routines. I also learned how to value my job and be grateful for it no matter what it involved. Do everything as if it was for the Lord.
I re-dedicated my life to Jesus Christ and was Baptized at The Foundry. Since Graduating from The Foundry, I’ve gotten a job I love, and I’m building back the meaningful relationships I thought would be lost forever.
Jesus Christ taught me how to swim (live a good life sober), and He used the incredible men and women from The Foundry as my Counselors, Teachers, and Brothers. I’m so thankful for this new life. I’m going on two years Sober, the longest I’ve ever been sober since 13. It would have never been possible without Jesus Christ and The Foundry. Thank you all for everything. I Praise God for you.
