A Simple Guide to Year-End Giving
The holiday season is full for all of us. Between celebrations, travel, family gatherings, and the pace of everyday life, the final weeks of the year can pass quickly.
In the middle of all that, year-end giving is something that’s easy to overlook, even though it’s an important part of thoughtfully closing out the year. Whether you already have a plan in place or are just beginning to think about it, here’s a simple guide to help you approach year-end giving with clarity and intention.
1. Come up with a plan and write it down
Start by putting your thoughts somewhere concrete. Grab a notebook or open the notes app on your phone and write down important dates, goals, and ideas as you think through your giving.
Timing matters at year’s end. To count for tax purposes, donations must be completed or postmarked by December 31. Online gifts must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on December 31.
Writing your plan down helps prevent good intentions from getting lost in a busy season.
2. Determine your giving amount
As you consider how much to give, it can be helpful to work with a financial advisor and to spend time praying through that decision. Giving looks different for every person and every family, and thoughtful generosity starts with discernment.
If you are age 70½ or older, you may also want to consider a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). A QCD allows individuals to give directly from an IRA to a qualified nonprofit, which can potentially reduce taxable income. Your financial advisor can help determine whether this option is right for you.
3. Write down the causes that matter to you
There are many worthy organizations doing meaningful work. Take time to list the charities and causes that align with your values and passions.
Researching the mission and impact of each organization helps ensure your giving reflects what matters most to you. Year-end giving is an opportunity to be intentional, not rushed.
4. Make it a family conversation
Year-end giving can also be a meaningful family practice. Sitting down with your spouse or involving your children allows you to express shared values with one voice.
Inviting kids into the conversation, at an age-appropriate level, helps teach generosity, thoughtfulness, and the importance of putting beliefs into action. These moments often shape how generosity is understood long after the season ends.
5. Consider non-cash giving options
In addition to cash gifts, some donors choose to give in other ways, such as donating appreciated stock or giving through a donor-advised fund. These options can sometimes provide additional tax benefits while supporting causes you care about.
As always, it’s wise to consult a financial advisor when considering non-cash gifts.
6. Check for employer matching gifts
Many employers offer matching gift programs that can double the impact of a donation. If you’re unsure whether your company participates, it’s worth checking before the end of the year. A few minutes of research can significantly increase the reach of your generosity.
