Seeking Wisdom through Wise Questions

by Graham Bufford

“Don’t be fools, then, but try to find out what the Lord wants you to do.”
-Ephesians 5:17 GNB

Effort is defined simply as a vigorous or determined attempt. Through the Law of Reaping and Sowing, we will reap the fruits of whatever seeds of effort we sow, be they righteous or sinful. Through the Law of Focus, we draw into ourselves that which occupies our attention.

James Allen once said, “The law of harvest is to reap more than you sow. Sow an act, and you reap a habit. Sow a habit and you reap a character. Sow a character and you reap a destiny.” The Lord considers both the big picture and tiniest of details important. He has the wisdom to show us how to take daily steps that bring us into our specific destinies, but His wisdom must be sought through prayer and we must ask wise questions.

We tend to seek God more for the answers to the big questions such as “Who am I?” & “Why am I here?” Answers to those questions are extremely important and we can rejoice that they’re available. However, could it be that our efforts in understanding what God wants us to do are largely dependent in asking God questions that are a bit more refined and specific?

Some of the greatest revelations we know from Scripture are due to someone asking God a direct question. Ambiguity is the enemy of all lasting change and we must embrace change if we are to grow into the person God desires us to be. Our returns will be consistently diminished if we remain ignorant to answers to questions that are ours alone to ask.

“God, who needs to benefit the most from my efforts today?”

“God, who needs you the most today and how can you send me to them?”

“God, what answers do I need from your Word this week?”

“God, what are Your priorities for my life this week?”

God, how do I get the maximum return for my focused efforts?

Imagine all the Body of Christ could accomplish if each member was vigorous and focused in applying God’s answers to each day’s specific questions!
