Monthly Prayer: My God is El Roi

She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.” Genesis 16:13

At the heart of every human being is the desire to be seen, known, and heard. The level of acceptance and love we are searching for on this earth is far greater than any human can possibly give. Yet, we are constantly trying to find new ways to be seen in hopes of filling the empty parts of our heart. We are concerned about the amount of “likes” on our social media posts. Receiving recognition in the workplace becomes the driving force behind the quality of our performance. We equate our value to what others think of us. As hard as we try, the empty parts will never be filled because we are looking to the wrong things to fill them.

When I turn my eyes to You, Lord, I find rest from the striving. You are the One who sees me. I am perfectly loved and fully known by You, El Roi. In Your presence, I can be me. You aren’t looking for me to achieve the highest award, run the fastest race, or be the greatest of all time. You value me simply because I am Yours. Your love is pure and unconditional, given without restraint or hesitation.

Lord, remind me how deeply you know me in the moments when I feel unseen. Speak Your love over me when I long to feel acceptance. Quiet me with Your presence when striving begins to well up inside of me. Lead me back to You always.
